Russia Pledges to Keep Nuclear Restrictions If U.S. Honors Same

(MENAFN) Russia said on Wednesday it will keep to the restrictions of the expired New START nuclear arms treaty with the United States as long as Washington does not go beyond them, Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov declared, underscoring Moscow’s conditional commitment amid uncertainty over the future of strategic arms control.

The 2010 New START pact, which capped deployed strategic nuclear warheads and delivery systems for the world’s two largest nuclear arsenals, officially lapsed earlier this month.

Lavrov said President Vladimir Putin had floated a proposal for both sides to voluntarily uphold the treaty’s limits but that Moscow has received no official response from Washington.

"We proceed from the understanding that this moratorium on our part, which was announced by the president, remains in effect, but only as long as the US also does not exceed the mentioned limits," Lavrov added.

On other geopolitical flashpoints, Lavrov addressed the dispute over Greenland, saying it “does not directly concern Moscow and should be resolved between Denmark and the United States,” but warned that if Greenland were militarized in a way that threatens Russia, Moscow would respond with “military-technical” countermeasures.

In a broader critique of Western policy, Lavrov said Western nations are striving to maintain global dominance amid what he described as a shift toward a “multipolar world order,” predicting “a struggle between the old former leaders, who are concentrated in the West, and new, ascendant centers of development representing the global majority.”

"The West has still not rid itself of the mania of its colonial and, I am not afraid to use this word, slave-owning grandeur," he said, sharply characterizing Western conduct.

Lavrov also lambasted U.S. actions against Venezuela and Cuba and criticized French military involvement in Africa’s Sahel region, while portraying Germany’s efforts to bolster its military as driven by “revanchist fantasies.”

On the Ukraine conflict, he reiterated that Russia remains prepared to pursue a diplomatic resolution based on agreements reached during a presidential meeting with the U.S. in Anchorage in August 2025.
